Most dangerous sources of radiation are the shielded radioactive sources, such as radiography cameras, gauge devices or radiation therapy machines.

There are more than 2 000 000 sources in use in the world. It is estimated that at least 40 – 50 sources are lost each year. In addition, the risk of illicit trafficing of nuclear material has reportedly increased in recent years. Border crossings, harbours and airports install portal and other radiation detection devices for security reasons.
